As a trainer and behaviorist on Maui, with over 15 years of experience, I have encountered many behavioral disorders in dogs that could have been prevented when the pup was very young. The science behind puppy development proves that the younger the better in terms of training and setting behavioral expectations. Through the years, I began a breeding program for Labrador Retrievers which has validated the fact that young dogs, with the proper raising methods, learn quickly and easily with very little effort! It's simply a matter of doing the right thing at the right time. This method extends from birth through puppyhood and can be introduced at any point in the puppy's development, though beginning at birth is certainly ideal.
Another issue I have dealt with is the older puppy who has not had any socialization or early enrichment due to concerns regarding vaccinations. While immunization is critical for the health of the pup, it usually comes at a psychological cost since most pet owners associate socialization with taking the puppy into the world. Normally, the final round of shots usually does not take place until the puppy is at least 16 weeks old. If no socialization takes place before that time, we lose vital developmental opportunities.
